Advancing Microbiological Science for Better Health
The Yakult Central Institute is at the core of Yakult’s scientific legacy. Founded to uphold our commitment to health through rigorous research, it serves as the global hub for probiotic science, innovation, and safety.
About the Institute
Established in 1955 in Tokyo, Japan, the Yakult Central Institute
leads our global research and development efforts. With over 60
years of microbiology expertise, it brings together scientists,
nutritionists, and microbiologists focused on deepening our
understanding of probiotics and their role in human health.
The institute continues to build on the vision of Dr. Minoru
Shirota, who first discovered the Lacticaseibacillus paracasei
strain Shirota — the probiotic strain used in Yakult.
