founder's vision

Who Was Dr. Minoru Shirota?

Dr. Minoru Shirota (1899–1982) was a Japanese microbiologist and medical doctor who devoted his life to preventive healthcare. While studying at Kyoto Imperial University, he became deeply interested in improving public health through nutrition and gut science.

A Vision Rooted in Preventive Medicine

In the 1930s, Japan faced widespread health challenges, especially among children. Dr. Shirota believed that a strong digestive system held the key to overall wellness. He was determined to make health-enhancing products affordable and accessible to all.

The Birth of Lacticaseibacillus paracasei strain Shirota

In 1930, he succeeded in cultivating a unique strain of beneficial bacteria — now known as Lacticaseibacillus paracasei strain Shirota — which could survive digestion and reach the intestines alive. This breakthrough laid the foundation for modern probiotics.

The Launch of Yakult (1935)

In 1935, Dr. Shirota created the first bottles of Yakult, a fermented probiotic milk drink enriched with the beneficial Shirota strain. His goal was simple yet revolutionary:
“To contribute to the health and happiness of people around the world.”

A Vision that Crossed Borders

Today, Dr. Shirota’s vision continues to guide Yakult’s mission as it delivers probiotic health benefits to people in over 40 countries and regions. His belief in preventive healthcare lives on in every bottle.
